Pork and Apple Burgers (a recipe)

Usually I make beef burgers, but I fancied a change, and this worked out so well with a bit of experimentation and some inspiration from various recipes online that I thought I’d post it. There’s probably an identical recipe somewhere else – I can’t be the only person who’s come up with this. Ah well.

Translating Python

@paulrpotts tweeted about a blog entry explaining why the founder of a company chose Common Lisp for a web project. There were good reasons given for not using Python, which Paul agrees with, and Paul linked to a blog entry about some of his own experience in Python. In that is a bit of Python [...]

Planless testing in Perl 6

In #perl6, our eyes were caught by a post on Matt Trout’s blog concerning the problems which arise from the traditional Perl way of test modules which require you to state at the start of your test file how many tests you’ll be running. I’m not going to repeat his arguments because they’re good ones. [...]

Perl 6 Grammars and Action Methods

I want to share some Perl 6 grammar knowledge and a bit of my enthusiasm for what this language is going to let people do. This is based on work I’ve been doing for the Form.pm module, which will be the replacement for Perl 5’s rather clunky format function.

Imagine that Christmas has come: you’re writing [...]

A Pork Casserole

This is really simple. I just finished eating a bowlful and it’s utterly gorgeous. I’m very vague on quantities.

Take about eight slices of streaky pork and cut into chunks. Chop a red onion and fry it in olive oil, then add two cloves of garlic, grated or crushed. Add six tomatoes cut into eighths, then [...]

Bellowhead at Derby Traditional Music and Arts Festival

First I have to mention the excellent Cross O’th Hands, who played for a ceilidh from 8pm until 10pm. There was a great deal of dancing and some great tunes.

However, the main act was Bellowhead, and it was clear that most people were there for them. The hall got busier and busier as the time [...]

XML is not necessarily the answer

Joe Shaw wrote about XML and Google’s Protocol Buffers, which I admit I hadn’t heard of before today, but it’s pretty irrelevant what the debate was, XML versus Protocol Buffers or XML versus Pink Fairy Protocol or whatever. The point he makes very well, and the point which is very important and, I feel, not [...]

Oooh, it draws fast again

Since Foresight’s X server started using EXA for acceleration by default with the intel driver, various bits of rendering on the desktop have been horribly slow. Fortunately it’s still possible to switch back to XAA, which at least on my i915 is faster. Just stick

Jonathan Coulton at Dingwalls, London

Yes, Jonathan Coulton in London! His first time performing ‘over here’ and yes, he did sing Over There — he sang it first, after saying he thought he should get it out of the way and then not being able to start because he was trying not to laugh.

The atmosphere prior to the start of [...]

Also, if you’re around and at a loose end, come over for dinner. I’ve got a dining table and four chairs, but you might have to bring a plate.
