GTK 2.2

Filed under: Linux — Matt Walton @ 12:55

Well, today I noticed that Gentoo now has the patch to make libgnomeui 2.0.x not crash when running with GTK 2.2.x, so I decided to bite the bullet and do the upgrade.

Had to recompile all the theme engines and everything, but now I’ve got it running I have one word for it – NICE. GTK 2.2 uses fontconfig for all its fonty stuff, and it shows… along with Xft2, it’s simply gorgeous. The joy of auto-configured fonts. Finally Linux stomps all over Windows’ font support! Woohoo!

Still got a way to go to beat Mac OS X for sheer rendering quality though, I think. Stupid patented hinting algorithms.

Must stop, should be submitting AIP coursework right about now.
