Coursework!

And if that sounds like a curse, good, because it should! I have FSP (formal systems specification) coursework to be done, and it’s irritating, because two of the questions, to my eyes, appear to be asking more or less the same thing. This, therefore, immediately makes me suspect that there’s something wrong with the way I have been interpreting them, because surely the lecturer isn’t stupid enough to set us questions which duplicate each other (and yes, both questions apply to the same case study as well, so it’s not that).

What’s more, although what they’re asking is indeed ever so slightly different, it’s presented in what I would consider to be the opposite order, considering that the schema which answers most of the second question has already been written to answer the first (although they’re actually the second and third questions of the coursework).

Very, very odd. I’ve sent out e-mails, hoping for guidance soon! Tarot cards not much help with this sort of thing really. Maybe someone should come up with a computer science set - but you’d need about four thousand cards, and spreads the size of my parents’ back garden, so perhaps not.

  1. What sort of thing do you find Tarot cards useful for?

  2. Divination - that’s what they’re for! Not so sure that’s really the right word - how did the verb ‘to divine’ end up being called that, when the adjective ‘divine’ refers to Gods and Goddesses? It’s not really got anything to do with either, perhaps it’s from the omniscience of God in many religions… I don’t know.

    Rambling. Err…

Oh yes, I don’t look at them as being able to see the future, I don’t believe that’s actually possible. What is possible is to look at the current situation and the past, and to draw conclusions about probable progression from that point. That’s what Tarot and other systems, like the I Ching, are for. In my opinion.

  3. So what specific situations have they been useful for in your life?

  4. I’m not going to go into the specifics, they’re fairly boring to anyone except me, but I tend to use them when I’m undecided or confused about something. By looking at what the cards show, it often provides me with an insight into whatever it is that I’m having trouble with. It doesn’t always lead to an easy solution, there are things in life which are too complicated to be resolved so easily, but it usually helps.

They tend to work with personal problems only though - things to do with ambitions and feelings - because although they’re good, they’re not very clever and don’t know squat about programming. Which is a shame.

  5. I use the I Ching occasionally - I find the process of divination very relaxing. The analysis of a hexagram can provide quite deep insights into your own perception of the subject matter, and the possible consequences of your actions.

Unfortunately, whilst having slightly more basis in mathematics, the I Ching knows nothing about programming either.

  6. Oh well, I guess life would just be too easy if we could pull all the solutions to our coursework out of a Tarot pack of a set of I Ching coins or sticks or whatever you happen to be using.
