Where next?

Filed under: Life — Matt Walton @ 22:39

The question on a lot of people’s lips at the moment. Ross doesn’t seem to know where he wants to live next year, although he’s in the fortunate position of knowing what he’ll be doing during that year. I’m not. I don’t know if I’m going hither or thither or hin or yon or there or there or indeed over there. Practically, of course, I only have three real choices.

The first choice is the obvious one – try very, very hard to get a PhD place somewhere, do the PhD and then have this whole dilemma again in three years.

The second choice is to just leave University with my BSc (Hons) (assuming I get it that is!) and try for a decent career. That’s kind of dull. I don’t like the thought of a 9-5 office job.

I don’t like the thought of an 8-5 office job either.

So that brings us down to the third choice, which is to get a job for a while, dig my way a bit out of student debt, and most importantly to embark on the mystical thing called Getting Fit.

Once that is accomplished, I would then make my way down to Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire or somewhere around there and join the police, thus no doubt horrifying my parents and probably some of my friends too (if you’re horrified, get used to it, I’m joining the police one way or another anyway if I get the slightest chance. The difference here is that I’d be joining the regulars, not the Specials). As to why it has to be in Thames Valley Police, well, blame it on my DNA I guess. Only one force in the country will currently admit people with eyesight like mine, and that’s them. Sucks, that. Just think, if I had perfect eyesight I’d probably be a police officer right now. Isn’t that weird?

Frustrating of course that something I can’t control has such a determining power over my future, and is part of the reason for my indecision. After all, if I’d got into the Specials in Nottingham when I applied over two years ago, I’d know if I could take being a regular, and know if that’s the career I wanted. But since I didn’t, I don’t, so what to do? Guess I could try getting an IT career down there and joining the Specials to find out, but relocating to somewhere I don’t know just to join a voluntary body (as opposed to actually doing it as a career) somehow seems rather imprudent.

Oh well. I’ve got plenty to do in the mean time. Food, here I come!
