Tangible Progress

Real progress being made with the dissertation now - I have a fully-working Triangle parser, a suitably functional (I hope) identifier table ADT and the beginnings of a contextual analyser, which hopefully shouldn’t be too evil to implement. Fingers crossed…

Grammars, grammars and more grammars

Ah the fun… I finally get an implementation of the Triangle parser for my dissertation which actually compiles. All well and good (and I found some serious muckups as I was debugging the compile errors, which is great). However, it turns out the grammar is horribly left-recursive so now I need to transform the thing into something that will actually parse correctly.

Wonderful.

Coursework!

And if that sounds like a curse, good, because it should! I have FSP (formal systems specification) coursework to be done, and it’s irritating, because two of the questions, to my eyes, appear to be asking more or less the same thing. This, therefore, immediately makes me suspect that there’s something wrong with the way I have been interpreting them, because surely the lecturer isn’t stupid enough to set us questions which duplicate each other (and yes, both questions apply to the same case study as well, so it’s not that).

What’s more, although what they’re asking is indeed ever so slightly different, it’s presented in what I would consider to be the opposite order, considering that the schema which answers most of the second question has already been written to answer the first (although they’re actually the second and third questions of the coursework).

Very, very odd. I’ve sent out e-mails, hoping for guidance soon! Tarot cards not much help with this sort of thing really. Maybe someone should come up with a computer science set - but you’d need about four thousand cards, and spreads the size of my parents’ back garden, so perhaps not.

Back from Durham

Went to Durham for the weekend, saw my sister, very nice. Took lots of pictures, as it was sunny and Durham looks nice when it’s sunny (a rare event). I’ll pick out some of the best ones and put them online some time soonish.

Digital Camera!

Thanks to my parents and my uncle, through their generosity (and my upcoming 21st birthday) I now am the proud owner of a Canon PowerShot A70 digital compact camera. For those too lazy to click on the link, its essential stats are:

- 3.2 megapixels
- CompactFlash slot
- a ridiculous number of automatic shooting modes
- 3x optical zoom
- optical viewfinder

And other stuff like that. It’s nice. For a sample, here is a photo of my parents’ wonderful kitchen (now you see why I hate the one at Uni so much, I’m a snob). This was taken at max resolution, then scaled down by 50% so it wouldn’t kill my poor little modem when I uploaded it. I need cable!!!
