Take that, e-mail marketers!

This article on The Register is rather interesting… what gets me most is how it keeps mentioning that various upcoming and existing provisions are going to make things very difficult for marketers to send us any e-mail at all.

And so I’m thinking, why do we care?

Server move completed

The move to the new server is now done, one or two of you might possibly have noticed the domain name disappearing for several hours last night while the DNS records got totally screwed up. But it’s working now, and I’m getting e-mail again, so I’m happy.

Software patents

Filed under: The Universe — MaW @ 8:29

Should’ve posted about this earlier I suppose, but the vote’s been delayed so there’s still some chance of things working out okay. Software patents are extremely evil — we’ll have none of that here please. Perhaps the European patent offices aren’t quite as stupid as the American one seems to be, but even without granting patents for which there is plenty of prior art, or which are just dumb (a patent on cut and paste, anyone? Bit late for that, I think — or how about a patent on selling legal services online? Where’s the inventive step in that one?) there is still a lot of potential for things to be Very Bad.

There’s a petition to sign, I’m not sure how much attention anyone will pay, but get that warm fuzzy feeling of doing something without actually having to write to your MEP (who is my MEP? I have no idea) — and it’s probably too late for that anyway.

Perhaps you’d be better off just praying.

Moving to new server

I’m currently in the process of migrating to a new server — please be patient while things go all do-lally, especially while the domain’s transferring over.

My e-mail will also be flakey for a while, so if you get a bounce, send it again the next day and it should get through. I hope.

Doing nasty things to spammers and e-mail worm writers in my imagination

I’ve had several e-mails recently from mail systems telling me they couldn’t deliver various e-mails from the address I use on my .NET passport account, which I never use as a from address. Some bright person or worm has harvested it and is using it to send spam or viruses or both. One was definitely a virus as it had a .pif file attached, the other only came with headers so I couldn’t tell what it was, I thought it was spam at the time but now I’m not so sure.

If only I could get my hands on the people who write these things for ten minutes with absolute immunity from prosecution… mind you, I’d probably have to fight through a crowd of other people to get to them.
