Bowling for Columbine

I’ve just seen Bowling for Columbine. If you haven’t seen it, get a copy and see it right now. I’m not quite sure what to say about it, because I’m not really sure how I feel about all the issues it raised.

One thing I am certain about though — it’s not raised my opinion of the USA one iota. Quite the opposite, in fact. I think I’ll stick to Europe for the time being.

  1. It is a good film. My dad dismissing Michael Moore as someone who spouts rubbish, which I think is a bit disappointing because he does raise some good points. His books are interesting reading too. The US isn’t a bad place to go - there are weirdos there just as there are here. Unfortunately it’s more likely they’ll have a gun in the US.

Mind you, I’ve been to the US loads of times and never seen a gun that wasn’t in the hands of an officer of the law.

  2. It is a good film, and very thought-provoking. There are valid questions raised - especially why the gun murder rate in the USA is so massively higher than that in Canada, Australia, Germany, France or the UK. I think the conclusion is pretty much that there is something wrong with the US culture, but what it is is uncertain.

I found it interesting how so many people he was talking to automatically assumed it had something to do with the mix of ethnic minorities in the USA, thus proving conclusively that most of them have no idea what things are like in other countries. Do they think the USA’s the only Western nation with black citizens?
