Powerbook!

Filed under: Hardware — Matt Walton @ 9:13

Well whaddaya know, I seem to have gotten myself a gorgeous shiny new 12″ G4 Powerbook. It’s really rather lovely — no Airport Extreme yet, because the shop didn’t have any cards in stock, but I can add one of those myself fairly easily. Until then of course I’m tied down to the network switch if I want to play with this thing online.

But that will soon be sorted and then the house will be mine to roam! Muahahahahahaha.

I shall post pictures later.

Oooh! Shiny!

I want a Powerbook.

I decided this quite a while ago, they’re gorgeous machines running an absolutely gorgeous OS, but then one of my colleagues got a fifteen inch one and I’m even more in love than I was before. They just seem to be so absurdly well designed, lots of little bits that make you think ‘oooh’. Even the connector for the mains power lead has a bit of Apple flair to it.

The only real difficulty involved is in not ordering one that’s far too expensive. I mean, I don’t want a 17″ screen on it so that bit’s not a problem, but I don’t really need a DVD writer in it either… and a backlit keyboard is just pure luxury, right? And surely a 60GB hard disk is enough?

Or is it?

In the mean time, I continue my preparations for NaNoWriMo — these include working out the plot for my novel, writing the last two parts of Only Slightly for the h2g2 Post and preparing a new section of this site for my writing, to complement my random mutterings in this blog with random bits of writing collected from various things I’ve done. Or rather, various things I will do, as I’m way too lazy to put up, say, the entirety of Only Slightly and Future Prefect. Why should I anyway when you can get at them all on h2g2?

Yeah, so I’m lazy. I’m saving my energy up for those 50,000 words in November.

Aural heaven

Filed under: Hardware — Matt Walton @ 21:21

Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player… THX certified sound card with a rather impressive feature list
Cambridge Soundworks Inspire 6700 6.1 speakers… disturbingly cheap speaker set for the quality which makes you wonder why they even make higher spec ones (let me listen to them and I’d probably figure out why… hint hint)

Put them both together, and in my computer and you get one very happy Matthew in aural heaven. Being able to watch DVDs in surround sound is brilliant, and Neverwinter Nights has never sounded so good!

Music’s not bad either :-)

I thought you might be interested in this

I ran the UT2003 benchmarking utility at 1024×768.

It said:
Flyby: 144.29528
Botmatch: 54.914856

Then I ran it at 1280×960 (for some reason the utility doesn’t support 1280×1024, my LCD’s native resolution, although the game itself does)

It said:
Flyby: 139.063522

And how, I hear you ask, did I achieve this?

Easy! Take one GeForce3 Ti200 card, throw it away, and replace with one shiny new ATi Radeon 9800 Pro with 128MB of memory.

And remember to turn the detail levels up to full – with accompanying ‘Holy shit!’ exclamation by the announcer. It doesn’t slow it down a bit.

Maybe I should try turning on anti-aliasing. But at that res, you don’t need it!

New phone, part 2

Filed under: Hardware — Matt Walton @ 13:06

Well, my phone suddenly started working today for no readily apparent reason. I’ll try and let people know the number but as I said before if you don’t have it and want it, drop me a line.
